Queen Anne’s county residents are still mourning the loss of Sudlersville Fire Chief Charles Clough Jr. 41-year-old Clough died instantly in a car crash last Wednesday, on his way to respond to a small house fire. Staff members at the volunteer fire company feared the worst when a caller reported that the pick-up truck Clough was driving slid of the road and slammed into a grove of trees. Funeral arrangements for the beloved fire chief have yet to be completed.

This one's better, because you start in present tense. But remember to keep sentences SHORT. This one: (Staff members at the volunteer fire company feared the worst when a caller reported that the pick-up truck Clough was driving slid of the road and slammed into a grove of trees) is TOO long.
